Site of the month: The Expert Consensus Guideline Series
Several Psychiatry guidelines are currently available on the world wide web. One interesting page for clinical psychiatrists to focus is The Expert Consensus Guideline Series (http://www.psychguides.com/). It is composed of practice guideline texts written for the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, discussing specific problems related to the treatment of various mental disorders, usually not covered by general guidelines. The opinions of 65 to 100 experts in each area of interest were gathered to draw consensus treatment approaches.
The following guidelines are now available:
Patient/family handouts in English or Spanish can also be found.
It must be pointed out that the Consensus Guidelines represent the general opinion of experts in different areas. These are not always in accord to evidence provided by clinical trials. It remains, however, an interesting site to drawing particularly useful "hints" on how to deal with some difficult clinical practice dilemas.
