Nonostante l’importanza riconosciuta al fenomeno "aggressività" nella genesi e nello sviluppo delle malattie sia psichiche che somatiche, gli strumenti atti ad indagarlo in maniera sistematica e standardizzata sono lontani dall’essere soddisfacenti. Il ricercatore deve perciò ricorrere spesso ad indagini indirette, mutuando strumenti utilizzati per analizzare o tratti similari o aspetti aspecifici del fenomeno. Così, ad esempio, si possono trarre informazioni sul vissuto aggressivo dai test di personalità e psicopatologici; l’uso di questionari comportamentali può fornire indicazioni circa la tendenza ad esprimere o meno le valenze aggressive, mentre le tecniche proiettive potranno far emergere dal profondo tematiche aggressive represse, ma non sopite; le tecniche di rilevazione sociale potranno aiutarci a capire la risonanza affettiva che l’aggressività suscita e ricorrendo, infine, allo studio della cognitività, si potranno individuare modalità comportamentali aggressive situazionali.

Per ovviare alla parcellizzazione che questa eterogeneità di approcci inevitabilmente comporta, sarebbe necessario un approccio integrato nel quale le variabili bio-psico-sociali fossero affrontate in maniera unitaria, così da avere una visione d’assieme dei diversi aspetti attraverso i quali la pulsione aggressiva si esprime.

Molti sono gli ostacoli al raggiungimento di questi obiettivi, a partire dalla natura episodica di questi comportamenti, per giungere alla mancanza, nell’uomo, di modelli di indagine metodologicamente definiti e standardizzati (Castrogiovanni et al., 1982).

È verosimile che solo un approccio multidimensionale, che esplori sia gli aspetti psicosociali delle valenze aggressive, sia i loro correlati biologici, possa consentire una migliore comprensione del fenomeno e l’individuazione di pattern comportamentali complessi che definiscano differenti modelli di aggressività riferibili tanto ai singoli individui quanto a specifici gruppi.

L’integrazione dei parametri psicosociali con quelli biologici può offrire la possibilità di individuare modelli strutturali con i quali correlare l’orientamento verso certe condotte, oltre a rivestire un indubbio interesse speculativo nella ricerca di modelli integrati.
