1) increase blood flow to our brain and the muscles in our arms and legs so we can run and escape

and

2) reduce blood flow to internal organs (because we dont need to digest food - we need to run)

WHY?

The extra blood flow delivers oxygen and glucose to our brain so it can direct the escape and oxygen and glucose to our muscles so they can move our body to run and fight if necessary. (Our brains and senses need to be especially keen so we don't run blindly from one tiger into four more!).

Internal organs like our liver, intestines and genitals dont need so much vital oxygen and glucose because their functions aren't a priority at the moment - whereas escape is!
